CAREER COUNSELING PROGRAM

With these texts from the Holy Scripture in mind, we begin the awesome calling of giving guidance and direction to the students entrusted to us. When we meet with students, we need to begin by discussing the importance of setting goals. We prioritize the goal selection process as follows:

  • Our goals should enable us to honor God.

  • Our goals should reflect our interests, natural talents, and values.

  • We should consider some steps we can take to accomplish our goals.

  • We have to be flexible, realizing that God may lead us to adjust or change our goals.

Before we meet individually with students they are given a Personal Data Form.  In a group-counseling situation students complete this form, responding to each of the above goal considerations and answering questions that relate to their general interests, areas of work in which they are interested, education levels they hope to attain, and more specific post secondary plans. Sophomores will complete a projected course schedule plan. Parents will have opportunity for input.

We meet individually with each student individually at least once each year to discuss concerns and goals. This school year (2008-2009) we will use a new career guidance tool called Career Cruising.  We believe that Career Cruising has a number of advantages over other career guidance programs. Career Cruising is an internet program, which means it can be accessed from home and encourages parental involvement. It is very user friendly. When the students complete their questionnaires they are able to access information about occupations suggested by the program (as well as other occupations of interest), information about colleges anywhere in the United States, information about college majors and they can also perform a job search.  The students can print out their information, either here at Covenant or at home.  We have already met with students to make sure they understand how to use Career Cruising.  They have been assigned User IDs and passwords, and can use Career Cruising from any internet connection.
