Mrs. Sue Looyenga
I came to CCHS for the first time as a student in its second year of existence in Fall of 1969; I returned as a teacher 35 years later in 2004. In the meantime, I was privileged to sit on both sides of the teacher’s desk for 26 years as a mother of six children, and then as a teacher in several schools, beginning in 1996, when I graduated from Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, IL. This is currently my fifth year at CCHS. Just this spring I completed a M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from Dordt College.
I spent several years away from my hometown of Grand Rapids from 1986 to 2004, living in both South Holland and Lansing, Illinois. As my children Lisabeth, Brendan, Brianna, Caitlin, Meghan, and Drew grew older, I continued to have an interest in Reformed education that began when I educated my children in their preschool years and continued to be in close contact with their schools during grade school and high school. I believe the Lord was using that experience to lay the vocation of teaching covenant children upon my heart for as long as He gives me strength to do this awesome task.
Along the way, I gained four children by marriage, James Verhey, Kelly Scholten, Jason Brands, and Darren DeBoer, and currently enjoy 13 (almost 14!) covenant grandchildren, who are also being nurtured in the fear of the Lord in their homes and in Christian schools in Edgerton, Minnesota, and Hudsonville (Heritage Chr.).
My greatest passion for learning has been in the areas of language and literature, and I am privileged to teach English literature, Latin I & II, and Heritage yearbook journalism at CCHS. God is good.
